To My Dearest QUEST,

This will be the **last ever** e-mail that you'll get from me as the outgoing communications chair of QUEST. I know, I know. It will be okay; you'll get over it eventually. You might be asking yourselves, why must I go without your semi-witty weekly e-mail chocked full of information and fabulous events? Well the reason for that is that we have a new board, who will go on and produce their own semi-witty weekly e-mail chocked full of information and fabulous events. On that note, I would like to formally introduce the 2010 QUEST Executive Board:

Over the past year and a half, QUEST has grown from one person's vision into an ESAC award winning organization with a ratified constitution (finally) and almost 100 people who receive its periodical. The drive of the 2008 and 2009 board has pushed this organization to new heights. With the enthusiasm and passion that the 2010 Executive Board shows, I'm positive that QUEST will continue to flourish in the future.

It truly was a pleasure to build this organization together. On behalf of the rest of the outgoing board, I thank ALL of you for your support, wish you the best for finals, and hope you have a relaxing winter break!

Salutations QUEST!

I hope everyone is making it through November without getting too beat up. It's hard to believe the month is half over! Anyway, attached to the this e-mail is our constitution which has not yet been ratified. We would like to vote on it this Tuesday. Please read it (or realistically skim it over) and come to the meeting a little bit informed. The positions for the 2010 QUEST Executive Board are listed in the constitution as well.

Join QUEST on Tuesday, November 17th at 8:30pm in the LGBT Center as we have our monthly general body meeting where we will be (finally) ratifying our constitution. In addition, please join us in welcoming our invited health graduate students for a panel on LGBT issues in the health field. Do you have questions about how your LGBT identity might affect the application process? Have you ever wondered what life is like as an out medical, dental or veterinary student or professional? Bring your questions and find out while joining our guests in a lovely cheese and fruit reception.

An Evening with Lt. Dan Choi: Dinner and Discussion
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The University of Pennsylvania will host a lecture by Lieutenant Daniel Choi on Thursday, November 19, at 5 pm in Houston Hall, Hall of Flags, followed by a unique student-led discussion. Choi will share his experiences as a gay Korean-American military officer who was dishonorably discharged for publicly coming out, and his ongoing fight for equality.

On March 19, 2009 Choi announced on “The Rachel Maddow Show” that he is gay. Upon this announcement, the U.S. Army began discharge proceedings against Choi for violating the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy (DADT), a U.S. Federal law restricting open gays and lesbians from serving in the military. A 2003 graduate of West Point, Choi was one of only eight in his graduating class who majored in Arabic. He served in the 10th Mountain division and in South Baghdad as a platoon leader, company executive officer, battalion and brigade staff officer, Iraqi Arabic language instructor, and civil-military reconstruction engineer. Despite his service to the U.S. Army and the country, he was discharged.

Following Choi’s speech, dinner will be served during discussions facilitated by members of two Penn student organizations, Queer People of Color and Sangam, in the Bistro and the Class of ’66 Reading Room at Houston Hall. Some topics the discussions will address include: homophobia in the military, homophobia in Asian Pacific American (APA) communities, interaction between APA and LGBT social justice movements, and unique issues faced by ‘double-minorities.’

The next couple of weeks are going to start getting busy again. Good thing for us is that with QUEST, busy usually means more fun. We want to remind you that our movie night is TOMORROW! Come see what Wu and Chen Auditorium is like without Powerpoint slides on the projector screens. This event is open to all, so bring your friends. And QUEST news begins...... NOW!

Wet Hot American Summer!

QUEST is having a movie night! Join us in Wu and Chen Auditorium on Tuesday, November 10th at 8pm for a special screening of “Wet Hot American Summer”. Take a break from your busy week to watch this quirky comedy. A synopsis is below. Food will be served.

The setting is Camp Firewood, the year 1981. It's the last day before everyone goes back to the real world, but there's still a summer's worth of unfinished business to resolve. At the center of the action is camp director Beth, who struggles to keep order while she falls in love with the local astrophysics professor. He is busy trying to save the camp from a deadly piece of NASA's Skylab which is hurtling toward earth. All that, plus: a dangerous waterfall rescue, love triangles, misfits, cool kids, and talking vegetable cans. The questions will all be resolved, of course, at the big talent show at the end of the day (IMDb).

Lambda Alliance Leadership Retreat

The Lambda Alliance Leadership Retreat this semester will take place on November 21st. Arrive at 10 AM to have a light breakfast before the retreat begins. This year's theme is LGBT Leaders: Past, Present, and Future and will feature David Azzolina and Nina Harris among the speakers.

***QUEST needs some general body members to go to this. If you would be interested please e-mail the board (questatpennexec@googlegroups.com) before Saturday the 14th. I have gone in the past and found that it was a great experience to become a better leader within the community.

The Penn Engineering t-shirts are only the beginning! QUEST was started at the end of the spring semester in 2008 and since then we have grown from a few people talking into almost 100 interested or supportive people receiving this very newsletter. Not bad, eh? Our main focus this semester is the make ourselves even more visible. That would include: making QUEST's name more visible, making sure people know that we exist as a resource and trying to further create a more welcoming environment in the sciences. Tomorrow, keep an eye out around campus. Hopefully people will know that we are out there.

I bet it’s been awhile since you’ve heard from me. I really do hope everyone is having an enjoyable and relaxing summer!

While most people have been winding themselves down after the school year, the QUEST board has been keeping up and trying to manage our events for next year as well as develop ourselves to be more visible. Check out the summer edition of QUEST News and stay tuned for our fall events schedule!

PennPortal Channel

One of the things that we have been able to do this summer was obtain and setup our very own channel on the PennPortal. In the future, we hope to use this to keep our events and links within easy reach of our membership or anyone else who is interested.

To add the channel, first log in to the PennPortal. Once logged in, click on “Add stuff” in the upper right hand corner. When on the next page, you can look in the categories tab section for “Student groups/organizations” and look for QUEST @ Penn in the available channels list or just look for it directly. Choose a column that you want our channel to appear in and you’re done! You now have the QUEST channel in your customized portal.

The LGBT Center is beginning a process to review and improve their website <http://www.vpul.upenn.edu/lgbtc/>. Our first step is to have a meeting bringing together a few people to create a brief questionnaire about improving the site, which will go out to the wider community. The meeting will be Monday, July 27th, from noon-1p at the Center (3907 Spruce St), with a light lunch provided. Please reply to Erin <ecross@upenn.edu> if you are interested and can attend. In preparation for the meeting, we ask participants take a look at the site and give some thought to what questions we should ask the community to elicit the most meaningful input. No further commitment – unless you want to be actively involved going forward – and it’s a free lunch. We’d really appreciate your help getting the project off the ground.

The semester is winding down and finals are around the corner. We're just about done for the year, but here's some things that we'd like you to know about (particularly the first thing!)

ESAC Recognition Award

Queer Undergraudates in Engineering, Science and Technology was recognized on April 13th, 2009 as the Engineering Student Activities Council group of the year! QUEST was "recognized because of their status as a relatively new club and their excellence in the running of their organization." The board would like to take this time to thank all those who were able to put forth their time and energy into this organization. We would especially like to thank the professionals, students, advisers and most importantly our general body for taking this organization from a vision of a couple of students and turning it into the continually expanding group that we are today. In the future we hope to continue working with an excellent group of students to create meaningful programming and tangible change on campus.

National Day Of Silence

The National Day of Silence brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Each year the event has grown, now with hundreds of thousands of students coming together to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of anti-LGBT behavior.

Come now and join ALLIES for UPenn's day of Silence! It will occur on April 22. Show your support and take a vow of silence and get a free T-Shirt to wear on the day of silence! T-shirts can be found this week on the walk or in the LGBT center. The breaking of the silence will be at 6 in the LGBT center. Come join us and listen to spoken word or read a piece that you have written!

Dearest QUEST,

This past week has been a blast with all the different events going on. Today was an especially great day with Team QUEST being a competitive team in the day's Pride Games (beating out many sports teams) and then later going to Quizzo at Mikey's. Quizzo turned out to be quite a successful event for us and might be QUEST's QPenn tradition in future years!

April General Body Meeting

Join QUEST for our April general body meeting. It will be on Tuesday, April 7th at 6pm in the LGBT Center. We have invited LGBT professors to come and speak with us about relevant issues in their chosen career paths. We hope you can join us!

Foundations of Molecular and Cellular Therapeutics Lecture

Joan Lau is a Penn Alum and active in PennGALA. She also works at Merck and is a Penn professor. She will be giving a lecture with a few speakers from the scientific area in industry to talk about their experiences. Interested students must let the professor know in advance (jlau@sas.upenn.edu) by April 6th. The event will be in Meyerson B5 from 6:30-8:30pm on April 8th, 2009.

Celebrating Latino Heritage in Science and Technology

We would formally like to invite you to our next event, which takes place tomorrow evening at 7PM. It is entitled, "A Celebration of Latino Heritage in Science and Technology" and features the DEAN of SEAS, Eduardo Glandt. The event will be fully catered, and is one of the few public events the Dean has decided to participate in this year. Please come out and show your support. It should be a wonderful evening, and we have been working hard to make this event a success.

Mr. & Mrs. SEAS Date Auction
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This Thursday, ESAC will be holding its annual Mr. and Mrs. SEAS Date Auction. Some of the hottest engineers (including QUEST co-chair Matt Feczko) will be auctioned off to the highest bidder. The winning bidder and their date get a gift certificate to any Steven Starr restaurant. The pre-sale tickets are $5 in front of Towne 111, and $7 at the door. Proceeds go to benefit the American Cancer Society in honor of belated professor Dr. Leif Finkel. Food and entertainment will be provided.
